Memoirs of a Fertile Imagination
Oil on canvas
33" x 30.5"
2008

This is the fourth painting of mine to explore the concept of semi-symmetrical companionship (the other three being Variations on a Fairground (2008) with its back-to-back figures, The Ground Luminosity (2006) with the mother and baby staring into the telescope-like device, and Apartheid (2006) with the man and woman forming the staircase).

A waterfall flows through an expanded game of noughts and crosses before disappearing into a chessboard. Meanwhile, a car being washed emerges from the mid torso of a heavily disfigured being. The car’s front is a phallus that ejaculates a fire engine, which merges into the mid torso of the being opposite. As the firefighter battles a fire, the crane-headed being attempts to remove the buttons from the scaly jacket of a fish, which leaps into the cottage-headed being’s mouth from a body of water that produced the original waterfall.

Memoirs of a Fertile Imagination is, as the title suggests, very much an exercise in bombast, flamboyance and colour, and is perhaps the most traditionally ‘surreal’ of all my paintings to date.

Very intriquing piece. I love conceptual artworks. To me this is what art is truly about! I can tell you put a lot into this piece both in time, imagination and expression.

I love how much flow there is to your artwork and the bold use of colour. Its very unqiue and stylish! I love the concept of this piece as well Fertility is the very thing that holds the key to all life. Its through this connection that life is formed and things are set in motion there after. I love the idea of a lot of elements, it truly tells a story. I see this piece almost as a puzzle with many layers upon layers of meaning and expression. Its almost as if all the elements are forming and coming together to define the new life being created. Or in this case the new ideas forming in the imagination. Its like all those elements are determining the outcome.

Fantastic work! This stuff can keep me going for hours. I just love it! Keep up the amazing style! And I am very glad you are using traditional methods to express your ideas.
