The Medicine Tree
Oil on canvas
40" x 28"
2007

I completed The Medicine Tree during a period when I was especially focused on gradient fluidity. Combine this compulsivity with the painting’s general size and detail, and we have a piece that took many months of frustrating perfecting. In fact, the painting is so "perfect" (and, to avoid accusations of arrogance, I must add that here I use the word with all complimentary denotations removed!) that of all my paintings, The Medicine Tree receives the most claims of inauthenticity. Many people do not believe I composed it with oil paints, but through airbrushing or computer generation! Well, I hope that viewing this painting in close-up will remove any suspicions that that is the case.

Duuude, I so totally saw something like that at a Grateful Dead concert!

All joking about pychodellic drugs aside, this is a remarkable piece you have made.

The can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason, above all-their capacity for good-I have sent them you, my only son.- Jor-El
